Glossary of Ingredient Terms:
The danger with many of the chemicals used in personal care is their unknown effect on the body. Given that the skin absorbs up to 60% of what we put on it, we need to be conscious of what we add into our blood stream. The area of personal care is not regulated and many chemicals used have not been assessed for their long-term effects. In formulating the Belcam Bath Therapy products, we have focused on eliminating unnecessary chemicals.
Healthy Choice: Healthy Choice is the logo we apply to our personal washes that have formulated without harsh ingredients. In our Healthy Choice formulas we have eliminated sulfates, parabens, propylene glycol, phthalates, petroleum, and artificial color. They also do not contain gluten nor animal by-products.
1,4-Dioxane: Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Belcam Bath Therapy Kids’ personal washes do not contain ingredients that are contaminated with 1,4-Dioxane, a known carcinogen. 1,4-Dioxane never appears on a label, as it is a by-product of a chemical reaction amongst ingredients in the formula.
1,4-Dioxane is a by-product of a petrochemical process called ethyoxylation, which involves using ethylene oxide (a known breast carcinogen) to process other chemicals in order to make them less harsh. For example, sodium laurel sulfate – notoriously harsh on the skin – is often converted to the gentler chemical sodium laureth sulfate by processing it with ethylene oxide (the "eth" denotes ethoxylation), which can result in 1,4-dioxane contamination. Sodium laureth sulfate is just one common example. More than 56 cosmetic ingredients are associated with the contaminant 1,4-dioxane.
Formaldehyde: Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Belcam Bath Therapy Kids’ personal washes do not contain ingredients that are contaminated with nor release Formaldehyde. Formaldehyde contaminates personal care products when common preservatives release formaldehyde over time in the container. Common ingredients likely to contaminate products with formaldehyde include quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin (in many kids’ bath formulations), imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea.
Tear free: An independent laboratory tested Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Belcam Bath Therapy Kids’ personal washes for eye irritability. We are proud to say that they have out performed many brands including J&J. Our products have a better Het-cam score (this is the test for eye irritability) providing a true "Tear free" claim.
Artificial Color: All our Belcam Bath Therapy personal washes do not contain artificial color. Unsafe colorants in personal care add health risks. Colors certified by US Food & Drug Administration are derived from petroleum, acetone or coal tars. They are known to be allergens and irritants. Some are suspected to be carcinogens.
Gluten: Gluten is a natural protein found in wheat and other grains that can cause an allergic reaction. Symptoms include itchy skin, rash, fatigue and abdominal pain. Gluten sensitive individuals often experience intolerance to body care products. By easily eliminating ingredients that contain gluten in Belcam Bath Therapy Aromatherapy, and Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Kids', we are able to service this customer group.
Hypoallergenic: The term indicates that the formulation contains no known allergens past the regulated acceptable limit. This greatly reduces the risk of any skin irritations. We have ensured that the nature identical fragrance oils we use support the hypoallergenic claim in Belcam Bath Therapy Aromatherapy Aloe and all of the Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Kids’ personal washes.
Natural Essential Oils: Essential oils are aromatic substances extracted from flowers, grasses, fruits, leaves, roots and trees. The term essential means they are pure but not necessarily allergen free. Many essential oils naturally contain allergens. For the Belcam Bath Therapy Aromatherapy Lavender & Vanilla and Rosemary & Mint, we use blends of natural essential oils to fragrance the products. Our products’ ingredient lists declare all natural allergens naturally contained in the essential oils.
Parabens: Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in personal care products. They have not been fully assessed for safety and as a result are classified as toxic by many health groups. Parabens are associated with allergic contact dermatitis. In Belcam Bath Therapy Aromatherapy, and Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Kids’, we have replaced Parabens with 2-phenoxyethanol, a synthetic copy of natural phenoxyethanol found in green tea.
Petroleum: Many personal care ingredients are petroleum derivatives. They can cause allergic reactions. We do not use petroleum derivatives in Belcam Bath Therapy Aromatherapy, and Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Kids’.
Phthalates: They are never mentioned on an ingredient label but are a key ingredient used in blending synthetic fragrances to enhance the fragrance and give it longer staying power. There are no Phthalates in the fragrance oils that we use in all of our Belcam Bath Therapy products and all our Spa Reflections products.
Propylene Glycol: Propylene Glycol is used as a moisturizing agent, as a solvent in fragrances or for its inherent anti-microbial properties. It can instigate immune system response that can include itching, burning, scaling and blistering of the skin. In Belcam Bath Therapy Aromatherapy, Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Kids’ and Belcam Bath Therapy Aromatherapy, and Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Kids', we use no Propylene Glycol.
Vegan: By not using any animal by- products in the Belcam Bath Therapy and Belcam Bath Therapy Aromatherapy, and Belcam Bath Therapy Baby and Kids’, we can service this customer with affordable, safe personal washes.
